Nurhan Gümüşmakas began his apprenticeship at 10 years old after school in his uncle Master Jeweler Masis Kayayan’s factory in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. As part of a fourth generation Grand Bazaar Jeweler family from Istanbul, Master Gümüşmakas was put through a true apprenticeship program to master Industrial design, wax making, diamond and gemstone selection, hand finishing of metals, polishing, and lapidary intaglio techniques. By 18 years old, Master Gümüşmakas was overseeing 20 jewelers creating and manufacturing private label jewelry for multiple world renowned brands and designers. At 26 years old, Master Gümüşmakas cofounded Prlanta Jewelry in Troy, Michigan with his uncle in the premier shopping district of the Detroit Metropolitan area. In 2010, at the age of 29, Master Gümüşmakas returned to Istanbul and founded GrandBazaarJewelers.com, a website specializing in wholesale jewelry manufacturing. In addition to his wholesale business, Master Gümüşmakas crafts a handful of one of a kind pieces per year under his premier brand, Nurrani, pushing the limits of his craft and preserving, not only his family’s legacy, but Anatolian Jewelry making itself.
